SCHOOL STATIONERY

A stationery pack is available from the School office and may be purchased during the month before your child begins school.

PRE-SCHOOL VISITS

These will take place on Wednesday mornings from  10.15 – 11.00am (children may stay for morning tea from 11 – 11.10am) three weeks before your child’s starting date at school. When you enrol your child, you will be given these dates. Children are expected to be enrolled before their first pre school visit. Enrolments are made through the school office. When enrolling your child you will need to bring their birth certificate and an immunisation certificates.

Children will start school on the Monday following their fifth birthday

INTRODUCTION TO SCHOOL
Starting school should be an exciting experience for 5 year olds. We recognise that for many children major adjustments are required and we try to make the transition to school as smooth as possible.

Some of the changes your child will face are: -

  • Mixing with a larger group of children, most bigger and older than themselves.
  • Sharing the teacher's time with the other children.
  • Learning to find their way around a new larger environment.
  • Getting used to set times for working, eating and playing.

All these changes can be very tiring so expect your child to require extra rest during the first few weeks at school.

In this pamphlet we have included some information that will assist you to become knowledgeable about our school, and will inform you of some of the ways in which you can be involved in your child’s education.

If you have any further queries please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s classroom teacher.

THE FIRST WEEK

Most settle quickly from the first day. A few children, however, become excited or anxious and this can be upsetting for parents. Usually it is best for you to leave the room as we have found that most children settle very quickly once the good-byes are over. If you have any concerns about this please talk to your child's teacher.

After your child has been at school for 4-6 weeks, the teacher will arrange a time to meet with you, to discuss your child's first few weeks at school. You may have a number of questions you wish to ask also.

If you wish to discuss any matters at all prior to this meeting, please arrange a time with the teacher. (Before school is generally not a good time to meet with the teacher)

Parents are asked to remember that after 9.00 am & before 3.00 pm are very busy times for teachers and the children. Please be considerate during these times.

INDEPENDENCE

Children are encouraged to be independent by caring for their own bags, books, book covers and clothing, ie to be able to hang up their coats and bags, to be able to bring their books and book covers into the classroom. They should be able to use the toilet without supervision and have clothing that unfastens easily. Should toileting accidents happen, a change of clothes in your child’s bag would be great.

Parents can assist by encouraging their child to do the above things on their own.

RATA TEAM ASSEMBLY

DAY    Every second Thursday

TIME   2.15 pm School Hall

This includes sharing work, celebrating birthdays, certificate presentations and singing.

ALL PARENTS WELCOME

READING

Your child will bring home a book to read with you, soon after starting school. These books should be read for enjoyment and will usually be material they can read with few errors. They may not know all the words at this stage.

Reading with your child should be a happy, sharing time between you.

If your child has difficulty with a word, please follow these steps:

  • Allow time for the child to work it out.
  • Discuss the picture and story - What would make sense?
  • Allow the child to begin the sentence again.
  • Tell the child or read the sentence or page to the child.

Readingtakes place throughout the school day, using all sorts of reading materials from large shared books to small books and taped stories as well as their own written work, stories, captions etc.

Children learn to read at different rates and will continue to progress at their own pace. With an understanding of each child's ability, the teacher will choose material which should assure your child's success.

If you have any concerns or queries about your child's learning or problems please see your child's teacher and arrange a time for discussion.

PARENTS CAN HELP BY:

  • Encouraging children to be independent eg. Dressing and undressing themselves.
  • Providing an old shirt for art and craft activities.
  • Naming all belongings.
  • Providing a change of clothes.
  • Discouraging the bringing of lollies, toys to school.
  • Ringing the school if your child is going to be away.
  • Providing school sunhats and sunblock during the summer months (Term 1 and Term 4).
  • Encouraging children to read their home reader and books brought home from the school library.
  • Ensuring that swimming togs are brought on swimming days - this is part of our summer physical education programme.
  • Using lower case letters when writing for or with your child.
  • Offering to help in classrooms with small groups and other classroom activities. See your child’s teacher.

We look forward to you joining us at Milson School. On enrolment there is a more detailed information booklet that will be given to you.
